General
With the exception of the nine years spent in Stonewall (1952 – 1961, Lyn has spent his entire life in the Winnipeg area. After high school, he spent two years as a signal helper for the CNR working in various locations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
Family
Lyn’s family consists of a daughter Donna who lives in Winnipeg, and a son Warren who lives in Calgary. He has four grandchildren, Lindsey, David, Ryan and Aidan. Lindsey has made him a great-grandfather to her three children, William, Abby and Carter.
His sister, Joan Kolbauer, lives in Winnipeg, and younger brother, Jack Giles lives in Orangeville, Ontario.
Work History
Lyn was newly married and barely 21 years of age when he joined the St. Boniface Police Department (later to become the amalgamated Winnipeg Police Service) in early 1963. Lyn spent 25 years with the Police Service, retiring with the rank of Sergeant in 1988.
Ironically, Lyn and Bob Essery were partnered together in 1980 for approximately a year. Bob had joined the St. James Police Department approximately the same time as Lyn had joined the St. Boniface PD. They spent their time together in the Vice Division and were assigned to prostitution and morals. Lyn recalls many humorous incidents while working with Bob, including the “double-door takedown” on a drug raid. You had to be there to appreciate the humour of the scene! Lyn adds, “There are many naked stories in the big city. “
On a more serious note, as Lyn and his partner Len Shakespeare attended to a silent alarm in July, 1969, and found themselves in the middle of an armed-holdup. They became engaged in a gunfight and sadly, Len Shakespeare was mortally wounded. The killer was arrested by Lyn at the scene and eventually three other males were apprehended. All were charged with murder of a police officer and were convicted of same. The accused killer was one of the last persons sentenced to be hanged in Canada. His sentence was later commuted to life in prison.
Immediately upon leaving the police department, Lyn went to work for the Manitoba Lotteries and Gaming Commission as an Investigator. He completed the R. C. M. P. Gambling Techniques Course and spent 10 years in the gaming field before retiring again in 1998. In all, Lyn spent 35 consecutive years as a sworn Peace Officer.
Lyn has continued to dabble in some small construction work (mostly roofing) that he took up as a part-time thing in earlier years.
