General
With the exception of one year in Ottawa & Montreal and 3 years on Baffin Island, Bonnie has always lived in Stonewall. She retired in December 2004 and since retiring she has spent several months of the year in BC with 2 of her 3 daughters. Bonnie is very fortunate to enjoy good health and is really enjoying life as a retiree. She has joined the Red Hat Society, which is proving to be a lot of fun --- a bunch of women over 50 who dress in red & purple and go on excursions as a group. They certainly attract a lot of attention! Bonnie also works as a girl Friday and courier when needed at her daughter’s tanning & hair salon. This doesn’t pay much but the benefits are “terrific”.
Family
In 1962, Bonnie married Doug Oakford and they were blessed with 3 lovely daughters, Kirsty, Tannis and Jody. Bonnie remarried in 1984 and Doug is also remarried. They share 7 wonderful grandchildren.
Tannis lives in Stonewall, where she owns and operates a hair & tanning salon in the “Jackson” building (same building Bonnie's Dad owned when they were all in school. It is now back in the family). Tannis has 2 children, a daughter Randi (who is about to make Bonnie a great grandmother!!!!) and a son Blain (who is special needs). Bonnie lives in a suite in Tannis’ home, so she can give Tannis physical and moral support with Blain.
Kirsty and her husband Dan Morrison live in Surrey BC. Kirsty has 2 daughters, Sara and Jaime, who have both graduated and are now working.
Jody and her husband Gerry Jansen live in Maple Ridge BC and are currently very busy raising a family of 3 – Kaleb 4 years old and Brooke & Rachel (twins) 1 ½ years old.
Bonnie is very fortunate to have a loving family. They are a close-knit bunch and share many wonderful times together.
Work History
Over the years Bonnie worked in a law office, Manitoba Hydro, Air Canada and the Interlake School Division office. In 1980, she began working at the Manitoba Legislature, as secretary to the Minister of Education. She then went on to work in the field (still with the Dept of Education), but somehow she shifted into the financial area and remained there until her retirement in 2004.
Education
Bonnie completed her Grade 12 at Stonewall Collegiate Institute and then took a business course at Success Business College. She took many computer courses over the years, which were not only a credit at work but a real bonus for home projects.
